It’s important to take care of your electric vehicle battery when charging your electric car. While electric car batteries last a long time (it is estimated that the batteries should last approximately 10 years), it is important to utilise proper charging practices to maintain your EV battery health and to help improve its longevity.

In this article we’re sharing our top tips to help you get the most out of your electric vehicle charging.

Tip 1: 20-80 rule

Did you know most electric vehicle owners do not need to keep their electric cars fully charged? EVs are fully capable of covering the necessary range and electric cars should only be fully charged for long distance journeys.

Research shows that keeping the state of charge between 20% to 80% is better for your EVs battery health and the longevity of your battery meaning that you do not have to charge your electric car 24/7 when you are not using it.  EV users should also make sure not to let your vehicle’s batteries get too low as this is equally as damaging as constantly charging your car.

Tip 2: Time your charge

The best time to charge your electric car battery is during the night. It’s best practice to time your charge to ensure that it isn’t on the charger too long as this will degrade the battery over time.  You can time your charge using a home charger that has a timer. Our favourite chargers where timed charging sessions are available include the Wallbox, Ohme, Andersen, and Project EV.  This way, you should stop your charge before you plan to take off in your electric car.

Finishing charging at least an hour before using your EV again is also advisable. This allows your battery to rest and cool down and also your EV battery will not overcharge while you are not attending to it.

Tip 3: Minimise exposure to extreme temperatures

When charging your electric vehicle, you should try your best to minimise exposure to high temperatures when parked.  This prevents your battery from being drained as well as overheating. If your battery overheats it loses its ability to store energy efficiently and thus does not help keep your EV battery health in good shape, so it’s best to try and avoid potentially overheating the battery.  Where possible, you should opt for parking in places where there is shade.

Tip 4: Opt for home charging where possible

From allowing the user to control charging times, lower costs and keeping your electric vehicle safe; home charging offers many advantages.  You can see the range of home chargers that we offer here. Home charging is a better option for EV users, as those who constantly use rapid charging too often could be potentially harming the cells located in your battery. This is because of how much heat that’s released at the high voltage level which may cause your battery to overheat. Rapid charging is a great option for long journeys or emergencies but it is better practice to opt for home charging where possible.
